It assumes the reader is already interested in the platform and now needs to know what will have to change in migration methods, administration, integrations, and day-to-day support practices.

Questions and Answers

1. How are existing TM1 databases migrated into PA SaaS?

IBM provides a TM1 Database Migration Utility that converts an existing TM1 version 11 database into TM1 Database 12.x format for use in PA SaaS.

The utility is downloaded from the PAW administration area and must be installed on a system that can access the source TM1 version 11 model. (Downloading and installing the TM1 Database 12 Migration Utility – IBM documentation)

After conversion, the migrated database content is packaged for upload and then restored into the SaaS environment through the browser-based PAW administration interface.

2. What should be done before running the migration utility?

Customers should review IBM’s preparation guidance carefully before using the utility. That includes steps to preserve items such as users’ private cube views and private dimension subsets during migration. (Preparing a Planning Analytics version 11 database for migration to TM1 Database 12 – IBM documentation)

It is also important to review IBM’s list of objects and features that do not migrate so that those gaps are identified before conversion starts rather than discovered later in testing. (Objects that are not migrated to TM1 Database 12 – IBM documentation)

The migration utility log should be treated as a required review artifact, not as an optional technical detail.

3. Are PAW assets migrated the same way as TM1 database content?

No. PAW assets and TM1 database content follow different paths.

PAW assets are typically moved using Lifecycle Management in the PAW administration area. That process is generally familiar to customers already using PAW. (Lifecycle Management – IBM documentation)

TM1 database content, by contrast, is migrated using the separate database migration utility and then restored into the SaaS environment.

4. What kinds of post-migration issues should teams be ready to troubleshoot?

Two common themes are behavior differences in MDX and the need to adjust existing Turbo Integrator logic.

For example, some MDX subsets that work in on-premises environments may need modification in SaaS. Similarly, TI code that uses functions such as SubsetCreateByMDX may need review if it produces errors or empty subsets after migration.

This is why functional testing is just as important as technical conversion.

5. Is the traditional tm1s.cfg file still used in PA SaaS?

No. The traditional tm1s.cfg file is no longer the central configuration method in the SaaS model.

Where applicable, the migration tooling carries settings forward, but most ongoing configuration is managed through the PAW administration interface for the specific TM1 database instance.

That means administrators need to shift from file-based server configuration habits toward PAW UI-driven configuration management.

6. How does transaction logging work in PA SaaS?

Transaction logging is controlled through PAW administration rather than through the older traditional patterns.

Logging can be configured through the database configuration interface, including legacy transaction log settings in one-hour increments.

Users then access transaction log information through the workbench interface, where they can query cube activity at leaf level or higher levels depending on the need.

7. Where do administrators find server and process logs?

In the SaaS model, server logs and process-related logging are accessed through the workbench experience rather than through direct server file access.

That is an important operational change for teams that are used to going directly to the file system on an application server.

Support staff should be trained on where those logs live in the interface or via the REST API and how to use the logs for troubleshooting.

8. How does on-premises ODBC data access work after moving to PA SaaS?

IBM provides an ODBC Data Connector, sometimes referred to as ODBCIS, for customers that need SaaS-based Turbo Integrator processes to reach on-premises or otherwise customer-managed databases.

This connector runs as a local service on a server where the needed ODBC connections are configured. It exposes those sources through an OData-compliant REST API that TM1 Database 12.x can use. (Install and starting ODBCIS – IBM documentation)

In practical terms, this means ODBC access still can be supported, but it is no longer the same direct in-server model many on-premises customers are used to.

9. What infrastructure or security considerations come with the ODBC Data Connector?

The connector requires network planning, including opening the required ports so the SaaS environment can communicate with it.

Customers will need to plan for TLS certificates as custom certificate usage is required. (Trusted certificate providers – IBM documentation)

Because the connector bridges cloud processing to customer-side data access, networking and security teams should be involved early to enable the inbound from IBM request, that comes from predefined IBM static IP addresses. (IBM egress IP Addresses – AWS and Azure – IBM documentation)

10. How does file handling change in PA SaaS?

File handling changes significantly. In SaaS, each TM1 database instance has a File Manager, and that is where files and folders are managed for use by Turbo Integrator processes.

There is no direct access to the traditional TM1 data folder. Processes that assume default export to that folder will need to be redesigned to use explicit folders created within File Manager.

This is often one of the biggest mindset changes for long-time TM1 administrators and developers.

11. Can TM1 databases in SaaS share file access with one another the way older environments sometimes did?

No, not in the traditional way.

There is no shared folder access between TM1 database instances in TM1 Database 12.x on SaaS. When a TI process uses file as a data source, it can only access files from the File Manager of that same instance.

If data or files need to move across TM1 databases, customers will need to use REST API approaches or other redesigned patterns such as the new ExecuteHTTPRequest Turbo Integrator function.

12. Does PA SaaS currently support FTP-based file movement?

No. Traditional FTP-style tooling such as SFTP or FTPS is not currently supported for moving files into or out of the environment in the way some customers may expect.

If automated file movement is required, REST APIs, TI-based HTTP methods, or external scripting approaches such as PowerShell or Python may be needed instead.

That means file automation design may need to be revisited as part of the migration.

13. Which commonly used Turbo Integrator functions have been removed or changed?

Their are several important changes. (Deprecated features – IBM documentation)

CubeGetLogChanges and CubeSetLogChanges are no longer available for controlling cube transaction logging in TI processes.

ExecuteCommand has been removed and is replaced conceptually by ExecuteHTTPRequest, but it is not a one-to-one replacement. TM1RunTI is also removed, with RunProcess serving as the path forward for process orchestration and parallel execution scenarios.

14. Why is the removal of ExecuteCommand such a big deal?

Because many on-premises implementations used ExecuteCommand as a bridge to operating system scripts, utilities, schedulers, or other command-line driven automation.

In SaaS, those patterns generally must be rethought using HTTP endpoints, REST APIs, native TI approaches, or external automation frameworks.

This can affect both technical design and support procedures, so each current ExecuteCommand usage should be reviewed individually.

15. How are development changes promoted to production in PA SaaS?

This is another major operational change. In a traditional on-premises environment, teams could sometimes stop a TM1 service, copy updated .pro, .rux, .dim, or other object files into the data directory, and restart the service.

That file-copy method is not available in PA SaaS because there is no direct access to the TM1 data folder.

Instead, customers need to adopt the supported promotion and source-control patterns available in the platform.

16. What role does Git play in PA SaaS?

Git integration is included in PAW and is the expected mechanism for managing Planning Analytics database objects between TM1 database instances and, if desired, with external repositories such as GitHub or Azure-based repositories. (Git Remote Repository – IBM documentation)

This supports promotion and change management for objects such as TI processes, dimensions, and rules.

However, Git does not manage cube data, so teams still need a separate approach for data movement and environment synchronization.

17. What is the practical takeaway for support and development teams?

Teams should expect a shift away from direct server access and toward platform-managed administration, API-oriented integration, UI-based logging and configuration, and Git-based object promotion.

Customers that recognize those shifts early usually adapt more smoothly than those that assume SaaS will preserve the same operational patterns they used on-premises.

The migration project should therefore include not only technical conversion, but also changes to team procedures, support playbooks, and deployment habits.

Relationship to the companion document

This FAQ is designed to complement a separate readiness document that explains why customers may want to move to PA SaaS and what should be assessed before the migration begins.
