Technically speaking, PAfE is <em>special <\/em><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>software that \u201cadds-in\u201d the ability to connect to TM1\/Planning Analytics environments to perform \u00a0<\/em>ad-hoc analysis (referred to as \u201cexplorations\u201d) as well as create many <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibm.com\/docs\/en\/planning-analytics\/2.0.0?topic=types-planning-analytics-microsoft-excel-report\">types of reports<\/a>, including quick reports, universal reports, dynamic reports and highly customized reports.<\/p>\n<p>If you already use IBM Excel Perspectives, the concept of connecting to <em>TM1\/Planning Analytics environments through Excel for analysis and reporting \u00a0isn\u2019t anything new, just know that PAfE works \u201ca little differently\u201d, but the overall concepts remain the same.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>How does it differ from Excel Perspectives?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Simply put, PAfE is designed to <em>support the future<\/em> of (Planning Analytics) Excel reporting, offering options which are not available in Perspectives. From an architectural viewpoint, Perspectives is TM1-native API based, whereas\u00a0Planning Analytics for Microsoft Excel\u00a0is REST API and MDX based. This difference affects how some of features are implemented and, frankly, in most cases, significantly improves performance.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019d like to dig deeper into what features that are implemented differently in\u00a0Planning Analytics for Microsoft Excel, you can access that information <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibm.com\/docs\/en\/planning-analytics\/2.0.0?topic=excel-differences-in-implementation-tm1-perspectives-features\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Where do I find PAfE? Is it downloadable?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Okay, now where can you find PAfE? \u00a0The answer depends on where <em>you<\/em> are, that is, if you are using IBM Planning Analytics <strong>on the <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibm.com\/cloud\"><strong>IBM Cloud<\/strong><\/a> or IBM Planning Analytics as a Service (SAAS) perhaps on AWS or Azure, you can download PAfE directly from\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibm.com\/docs\/en\/planning-analytics\/2.0.0?topic=analytics-planning-workspace\">Planning Analytics Workspace<\/a> (PAW) by clicking on the <strong>Administration<\/strong> panel, then \u00a0<strong>Excel and Customizations<\/strong>. From there you can select the latest version of the add-in and click the blue download button:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4443\" src=\"https:\/\/quebit.com\/askquebit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Picture1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"288\" srcset=\"https:\/\/quebit.com\/askquebit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Picture1.png 900w, https:\/\/quebit.com\/askquebit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Picture1-300x96.png 300w, https:\/\/quebit.com\/askquebit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Picture1-768x246.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If you are going to use PAfE for accessing a local or \u201con-premises\u201d TM1\/Planning Analytics environments, then you can download PAfE by logging into IBM Fix Central at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibm.com\/support\/fixcentral\/\">https:\/\/www.ibm.com\/support\/fixcentral\/<\/a>\u00a0using your IBM ID. Once logged in, search for \u2018IBM Planning Analytics Local\u2019 on the \u2018Find Product\u2019 screen, click \u2018Continue\u2019 and then select \u2018Browse for fixes\u2019 on the subsequent screen (additional details on finding and downloading can be viewed <a href=\"https:\/\/quebit.com\/askquebit\/demystifying-the-pa-pafe-paw-passl-install-files-from-ibm-fix-central\/\">here<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Are there any prerequisites that I need to be aware of?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you are using MS Windows and a \u201creasonably new\u201d (think 2.0.\u00a065 and newer) version of Excel, then the only other requirement will be the Microsoft .NET Framework (for more information on .Net, see\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibm.com\/docs\/en\/SSD29G_2.0.0\/com.ibm.swg.ba.cognos.tm1_inst.2.0.0.doc\/t_ig_cor_installdotnetframework.html\">Installing Microsoft .NET Framework<\/a>). A little advice, it\u2019s good idea to identify which version (and know that you can have multiple versions of .NET Framework installed and running on a machine) of .Net is installed on your machine before proceeding. The download is a <a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/windows\/zip-and-unzip-files-8d28fa72-f2f9-712f-67df-f80cf89fd4e5\">\u201czipped\u201d (compressed) file<\/a> named with the version number, for example \u201cIntegration2.0.96.12\u201d, containing the add-in:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4445\" src=\"https:\/\/quebit.com\/askquebit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Picture3.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"125\" srcset=\"https:\/\/quebit.com\/askquebit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Picture3.png 900w, https:\/\/quebit.com\/askquebit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Picture3-300x42.png 300w, https:\/\/quebit.com\/askquebit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Picture3-768x107.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Once you uncompress the file you can:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Move the .xll file to the desired directory<\/li>\n<li>Open Microsoft Excel<\/li>\n<li>Select the Developer tab<\/li>\n<li>Select Excel Add-ins in the ribbon<\/li>\n<li>Select Browse<\/li>\n<li>Select the .xll file<\/li>\n<li>Select OK<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>(You can also open the XLL file manually by going to File, then Options, then Add-ins, then Excel Add-ins, then Go, and finally Browse).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Addressing Blocking Policies<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On <em>rare<\/em> occasions, Excel my block untrusted XLL add-ins by default and the Paf Add-in may not load or will be deactivated:<\/p>\n<p><strong> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4446\" src=\"https:\/\/quebit.com\/askquebit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Picture4.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"344\" srcset=\"https:\/\/quebit.com\/askquebit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Picture4.png 450w, https:\/\/quebit.com\/askquebit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Picture4-300x229.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To resolve this issue, you can try <a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/topic\/excel-is-blocking-untrusted-xll-add-ins-by-default-1e3752e2-1177-4444-a807-7b700266a6fb?ns=excel&amp;version=90&amp;syslcid=1033&amp;uilcid=1033&amp;appver=zxl900&amp;helpid=113820&amp;ui=en-us&amp;rs=en-us&amp;ad=us\">manually unblocking it<\/a> or, since some settings are typically managed by a system administrator, you may need to reach out to your organizations desktop support group.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Connecting to Planning Analytics with PAfE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After installing PAfE, the <em>next<\/em> <em>step<\/em> is to set up a connection to a TM1\\Planning Analytics environment. To do that you can:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Click the\u00a0<strong>Options<\/strong>icon in the toolbar of\u00a0Planning Analytics for Microsoft Excel.<\/li>\n<li>Under Options, click <strong>IBM<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Click the <strong>ADD<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>On the Add\/Edit Connection dialog, add the address for\u00a0Planning Analytics for Microsoft Excelthat is provided in the\u00a0Planning Analytics\u00a0Welcome Kit. For example:<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">https:\/\/<em>customername<\/em>.planning-analytics.cloud.ibm.com\/<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4447\" src=\"https:\/\/quebit.com\/askquebit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Picture5.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"704\" height=\"331\" srcset=\"https:\/\/quebit.com\/askquebit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Picture5.png 704w, https:\/\/quebit.com\/askquebit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Picture5-300x141.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 704px) 100vw, 704px\" \/><\/p>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li>Make sure to click <strong>Test Connection<\/strong> before clicking <strong>Save<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Testing reports generated in IBM Excel Perspectives<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Again, IBM Planning Analytics for Excel (PAfE) is intended to replace TM1 Perspectives at some point in the future, but Perspectives is still supported and can be used, although that is not recommended as there may be differences in performance or functionality when porting macro automation from TM1 Perspectives to PAfE (especially when moving from an on-premises Planning Analytics environment to a Cloud environment).<\/p>\n<p>Since PAfE <em>does <\/em>support the same reports as IBM Perspectives, Sliced reports and reports that use Active Forms <em>should <\/em>still work as Custom Reports in PAfE (of course, keep in mind that PAfE also offers new reporting options, such as Quick Reports, which are not available in Perspectives, so some consideration should be done).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Where are the Reports<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Any reports previously created using IBM Perspectives typically would have been stored \u201cunder\u201d the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibm.com\/docs\/en\/planning-analytics\/2.0.0?topic=overview-application-folders-files-tm1-server\">TM1 Application folder<\/a>. Using Planning Analytics for Excel, these reports should still exist in that location and will be accessible from thee IBM Planning Analytics ribbon by clicking the Open icon, then Double-clicking on the TM1 Server:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4448\" src=\"https:\/\/quebit.com\/askquebit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Picture6.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"142\" srcset=\"https:\/\/quebit.com\/askquebit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Picture6.png 900w, https:\/\/quebit.com\/askquebit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Picture6-300x47.png 300w, https:\/\/quebit.com\/askquebit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Picture6-768x121.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>You can store the reports that you create or modify in the Applications folder, but you can <em>also<\/em> open and save reports <u>locally<\/u> (on your computer).
