Rather, the \u201cweakness\u201d of a model is exposed as the application scales.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cScaling\u201d can include adding additional users, modifications to security schemas, increasing data volume or velocity, material data reclassifications, and so on.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Perfect Design<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The first step to beginning a data modeling exercise is to accept that there are no \u201cperfect\u201d data model designs, only <em>very good<\/em> ones. Since organizational (and data) requirements grow and evolve, there can be no \u201cone size fits all\u201d or \u201conce and done\u201d models.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A \u201cgood\u201d data model design is one that serves as a <em>foundation for data use<\/em> by <em>providing correct answers<\/em> from trusted data sources, can \u201cflex\u201d to handle changing data formats and needs , and is user-friendly in that it is easy for users to view and understand the data and its relationships.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Some other characteristics of a \u201cgood\u201d data model design include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Limited errors in development<\/li>\n<li>Data can be easily consumed by all<\/li>\n<li>Acceptable and Predictable levels of performance<\/li>\n<li>Flexible to meet changes in requirements<\/li>\n<li>Good naming standards<\/li>\n<li>Standardized data practices<\/li>\n<li>Reasonable levels of data duplication<\/li>\n<li>Easy and robust validation<\/li>\n<li>Is extensible and reusable<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Next Steps<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With the above \u201ctop of mind\u201d, how do you ensure that the model design that you came up with will be \u201cgood\u201d?<\/p>\n<p>Firstly, you must thoroughly understand the objective of the new model (why are you building a new model?) and then set <em>specific<\/em> goals for the design (the more specific, the better) to meet those objectives or to \u201csatisfy the \u201cwhy\u201d. Finally, it is always helpful to have a <a href=\"https:\/\/quebit.com\/what-we-do\/advisory-services\/\">seasoned expert<\/a> perform an <em>architectural review<\/em> of your proposed design or, if you have a model already up and running, conduct a health assessment.
