{"id":3499,"date":"2023-04-12T15:37:04","date_gmt":"2023-04-12T15:37:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/quebit.com\/askquebit\/maintain-your-dimensions-and-attributes-at-the-same-time-to-save-time\/"},"modified":"2026-01-22T17:44:59","modified_gmt":"2026-01-22T17:44:59","slug":"maintain-your-dimensions-and-attributes-at-the-same-time-to-save-time","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/quebit.com\/askquebit\/maintain-your-dimensions-and-attributes-at-the-same-time-to-save-time\/","title":{"rendered":"How do I maintain your DIMENSIONS and ATTRIBUTES at the SAME TIME to SAVE TIME?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As with most technologies, there are usually multiple ways to accomplish the same task.\u00a0 When performing dimension and\/or attribute maintenance, the first step is to quantify the number of changes that need to be made.\u00a0 If you have 1 or 2 minor changes, then updating the structures manually might be a good way to go.\u00a0 However, if your list is more substantial, you may want to consider using the IMPORT method.<\/p>\n<p>Within the Modeling menu, there are two separate links for Dimensions and Dimension Attributes, each containing their own methods for manually maintaining or importing elements and structures.\u00a0 But, why not save some time and maintain them BOTH in one fell swoop?<\/p>\n<p>In this article, we will demonstrate how you can do just that by maintaining and importing your Dimension and associated \u201ctagged\u201d Attributes in a single template.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">*<em>Note: This example assumes that you are working with a LIST type dimension and that the ATTRIBUTE has already been created.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/quebit.com\/adaptive\/\">Adaptive Planning<\/a>, you can TAG your dimension elements with Attributes, allowing you to produce alternate hierarchies to categorize your data, and add filters to your cube sheets, reports and charts.<\/p>\n<p>In this example, we will be looking at the <strong>STATE <\/strong>dimension and the <strong>SALES REGION<\/strong> attributes.<\/p>\n<p>From the main menu, navigate to <strong>MODELING<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-635 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/quebit.com\/askquebit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Modeling-1-min.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"277\" height=\"61\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Select Dimension Attributes<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-636 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/quebit.com\/askquebit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Modeling-2-min.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"208\" height=\"287\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Ensure that the check box to automatically create values is checked.\u00a0 For example, lets assume that the only two Sales Region attribute <strong>Values<\/strong> we currently have setup are \u201cSoutheast\u201d and \u201cWest\u201d.\u00a0 By checking this box, you can assign other regions like \u201cNortheast\u201d and \u201cCentral\u201d in your import file and they will automatically be added to the attribute structure AND assigned as dimension tags upon import.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-637 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/quebit.com\/askquebit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Modeling-3-min.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"819\" height=\"282\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Next, from the Modeling menu, select <strong>DIMENSIONS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-638 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/quebit.com\/askquebit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Modeling-4-min.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"307\" \/><\/p>\n<p>To be sure you are starting with the most recent existing structures, you should <strong>generate a printable view<\/strong>, which will download <u>all<\/u> Dimension structures and their associated settings and Attributes.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-639 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/quebit.com\/askquebit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Modeling-5-min.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"792\" height=\"168\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The printable view should look something like this.\u00a0 Notice the Sales Region column.\u00a0 It appears that someone (oops, it was me) made a mistake during the last import and accidentally copied the \u201cSoutheast\u201d region value to multiple states in error.<\/p>\n<p>You have a few options.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Correct the attribute tags manually (yawn).<\/li>\n<li>You can simply fix it directly on the Printable View template, and re-import\/update the values. (yay!)<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-642 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/quebit.com\/askquebit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Modeling-0-1024x276.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"605\" height=\"163\" \/><\/li>\n<li>You can download a Dimension template and fix it there. (another yay!)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>I\u2019ll choose option 3 to illustrate how to populate the dimension import template.<\/p>\n<p>From the Dimensions screen, select <strong>IMPORT DIMENSION STRUCTURE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Download the <strong>IMPORT<\/strong> template<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-643 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/quebit.com\/askquebit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Modeling-11.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"455\" height=\"292\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Open the template and note the <strong>INSTRUCTIONS<\/strong> tab for detailed instructions.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-640 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/quebit.com\/askquebit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Modeling-6-min-1024x294.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"605\" height=\"174\" \/><\/p>\n<p>On the <strong>DIMENSIONS<\/strong> tab, you can maintain <strong>both<\/strong> Dimension values and settings, as well as Attributes.\u00a0 In this case, we just want to correct our attributes assignments.\u00a0 To do this, FIRST insert the attribute column at the end and label it as the name of the Attribute you want to maintain, \u201c<strong>Sales Region<\/strong>\u201d.\u00a0 NEXT, populate the template with the information obtained from the Printable View (Dimension Name, Dimension Value and Sales Region, etc.).\u00a0 FINALLY, correct the Attributes as necessary.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-641 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/quebit.com\/askquebit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Modeling-7-min-1024x323.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"605\" height=\"191\" \/><\/p>\n<p>From the Dimensions screen, click <strong>IMPORT DIMENSION STRUCTURE<\/strong> and CHOOSE FILE to select the Dimensions.xlsx template. \u00a0\u00a0Be sure to select the appropriate Import operation (select UPDATE in this case since we are not adding new dimension elements).\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Click <strong>UPLOAD.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-644 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/quebit.com\/askquebit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Modeling-12.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"439\" height=\"337\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Verify that the dimension elements were TAGGED with the appropriate new or corrected ATTRIBUTE Values, either by generating another Printable View, or by going to the DIMENSIONS screen.\u00a0 Notice the STATE ATTRIBUTES at the bottom right of the Dimensions screen.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-645 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/quebit.com\/askquebit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/mod12.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"816\" height=\"457\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And, Voila!\u00a0 You\u2019re done!<\/p>\n<p>We hope you found this article helpful.
