These are invaluable elemental information functions within Planning Analytics. These functions can be used in Rules, Worksheets, and TI Processes. <strong>ELPAR<\/strong> and <strong>ELCOMP<\/strong> are very similar to one another and have other related functions which can return information about how elements reside within dimensions. In this post, I will discuss the functions <strong>ELISPAR<\/strong>, <strong>ELPARN<\/strong>, and <strong>ELPAR<\/strong> as well as their counterparts <strong>ELISCOMP<\/strong>, <strong>ELCOMPN<\/strong>, and <strong>ELCOMP<\/strong>. I will go over how these can be used for working with elements in dimensions.<\/p>\n<p>We can work through how to use these functions with this sample \u201cFAMILY\u201d dimension shown below.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1084 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/quebit.com\/askquebit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/elcomp1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"152\" height=\"152\" \/><\/p>\n<p>From the example, there is a consolidated element called \u201cParent1\u201d. This element has 3 leaf children assigned to it. If we wanted to confirm that \u201cParent1\u201d is an immediate parent to \u201cChild1\u201d we can use the function <strong>ELISPAR<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>ELISPAR<\/strong>( dimension , assumed-Parent , assumed-Child )<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>ELISPAR<\/strong>( \u2018Family\u2019 , \u2018Parent1\u2019 , \u2018Child1\u2019 ) = 1<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>ELISPAR<\/strong>( \u2018Family\u2019 , \u2018Child1\u2019 , \u2018Parent1\u2019 ) = 0<\/p>\n<p>This function will return a Boolean result 1=TRUE or 0=FALSE to confirm whether \u201cParent1\u201d IS or IS NOT an <u>immediate<\/u> parent to \u201cChild1\u201d. The order of the arguments is important, notice in the second example how a 0\/False result is returned. This is because \u201cChild1\u201d, is NOT a parent to \u201cParent1\u201d. This will only work for immediate parents where their levels can only differ by 1. In order to check across any number of levels we can use the function.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>ELISANC( dimension , assumed-Parent , assumed-Child )<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>ELISANC<\/strong>( \u2018Family\u2019 , \u2018Parent\u2019 , \u2018Child1\u2019 ) = 1<\/p>\n<p>This function has a counterpart with <strong>ELISCOMP<\/strong>. COMP functions focus on child elements. In this example the arguments are reversed because we are checking the hierarchy in the opposite direction.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>ELISCOMP( dimension , assumed-Child , assumed-Parent )<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>ELISCOMP<\/strong>( &#8216;Family&#8217; , &#8216;Child1&#8217; , &#8216;Parent1&#8217; ) = 1<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>ELISCOMP<\/strong>( &#8216;Family&#8217; , &#8216;Parent1&#8217; , &#8216;Child1&#8217; ) = 0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1085 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/quebit.com\/askquebit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/elcomp2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"152\" height=\"152\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In order to see the number of parents an element is assigned; we can use the function <strong>ELPARN<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>ELPARN(\u00a0 dimension , assumed-Child )<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>ELPARN<\/strong>( \u2018Family\u2019 , \u2018Child1\u2019 ) = 1<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>ELPARN<\/strong>( &#8216;Family&#8217; , &#8216;Child2&#8217; ) = 2<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>ELPARN<\/strong>( &#8216;Family&#8217; , &#8216;Parent1&#8217; ) = 1<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>ELPARN<\/strong>( &#8216;Family&#8217; , &#8216;GrandParent&#8217; ) = 0<\/p>\n<p>This function will return a value between 0 and the total number of parents to the provided element. With this function, we can see the results are the same for both \u201cChild1\u201d and \u00a0\u201cParent1\u201d, because both these elements belong to only 1 parent element. When \u201cChild2\u201d becomes the argument, the result is 2 because the element belongs to 2 parents. When the argument of \u201cGrandParent\u201d is used, the result is 0 because \u201cGrandParent\u201d has no parent element.<\/p>\n<p>The complementary function to this is to use the <strong>ELCOMPN<\/strong> function. This will return the number of children elements that belong to the provided element argument.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>ELCOMPN(\u00a0 dimension , assumed-Parent )<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>ELCOMPN<\/strong>( \u2018Family\u2019 , \u2018Child1\u2019 ) = 0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>ELCOMPN<\/strong>( &#8216;Family&#8217; , &#8216;Child2&#8217; ) = 0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>ELCOMPN<\/strong>( &#8216;Family&#8217; , &#8216;Parent1&#8217; ) = 3<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>ELCOMPN<\/strong>( &#8216;Family&#8217; , &#8216;GrandParent&#8217; ) = 2<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The results for \u201cChild1\u201d and \u201cChild2\u201d are both 0 because these are leaf elements and cannot have any children assigned. \u201cParent1\u201d returns the value 3 for each of the elements that belong to it. The same situation applies when \u201cGrandParent\u201d is used as the argument, resulting in 2.<\/p>\n<p>In order to obtain the name of a parent element to a child element, we can use the function <strong>ELPAR<\/strong>. <strong>ELPAR<\/strong> requires an additional numeric argument that should correspond to the number of parents that the referenced element belongs. If a number provided does not match valid number of parents, the result will be a null string.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>ELPAN(\u00a0 dimension , assumed-Child , Parent# )<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>ELPAR<\/strong>(\u00a0 \u2018Family\u2019 , \u2018Child2\u2019 , 0 ) = \u2018\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>ELPAR<\/strong>(\u00a0 \u2018Family\u2019 , \u2018Child2\u2019 , 1 ) = \u2018Parent1\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>ELPAR<\/strong>(\u00a0 \u2018Family\u2019 , \u2018Child2\u2019 , 2 ) = \u2018Parent2\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>ELPAR<\/strong>(\u00a0 \u2018Family\u2019 , \u2018Child2\u2019 , 3 ) = \u2018\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p>From the result shown above, when the numeric argument of 0 or 3 is used, a null string is returned. This is because those are not valid parent values for \u201cChild2\u201d, which only has 2 parents. Using valid arguments of 1 or 2 will return \u201cParent1\u201d or \u201cParent2\u201d respectively. The numeric index corresponds to the order in which the parentage was assigned. These references could change is certain hierarchies are updated differently than others.<\/p>\n<p>The complement of <strong>ELPAR<\/strong> is <strong>ELCOMP<\/strong>, which relates to the child count an element would have.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>ELCOMP(\u00a0 dimension , assumed-Child , Child# )<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>ELCOMP<\/strong>(\u00a0 \u2018Family\u2019 , \u2018GrandParent\u2019 , 0 ) = \u2018\u2019<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>ELCOMP<\/strong>(\u00a0 \u2018Family\u2019 , \u2018GrandParent\u2019 , 1 ) = \u2018Parent1\u2019<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>ELCOMP<\/strong>(\u00a0 \u2018Family\u2019 , \u2018GrandParent\u2019 , 2 ) = \u2018Parent2\u2019<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>ELCOMP<\/strong>(\u00a0 \u2018Family\u2019 , \u2018GrandParent\u2019 , 3 ) = \u2018\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The element \u201cGrandParent\u201d only has 2 children, so this would only return result for arguments of either 1 or 2 shown below.
