{"id":3329,"date":"2023-04-12T15:32:43","date_gmt":"2023-04-12T15:32:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/quebit.com\/askquebit\/how-to-create-a-rule\/"},"modified":"2026-01-20T15:21:14","modified_gmt":"2026-01-20T15:21:14","slug":"how-to-create-a-rule","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/quebit.com\/askquebit\/how-to-create-a-rule\/","title":{"rendered":"How Do I Create a Business Rule in IBM Planning Analytics to Perform Custom Calculations?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>IBM Planning Analytics\u2019 Calculation Types<\/h2>\n<p>IBM Planning Analytics is well known for the speed with which it performs on-the-fly, on-demand aggregations, consolidations and other calculations.<\/p>\n<p>The calculation of a specific number in a Planning Analytics cube is not performed until it is requested, for example by a DBR() formula in a spreadsheet, and when it is performed the answer is delivered very quickly \u2013 often instantaneously.<\/p>\n<p>Most competing products have some concept of a batch pre-calculation, which means that if base level numbers change in a cube, end users will have to wait for a longer (minutes or hours) process to complete before calculated values are available.<\/p>\n<p>Planning Analytics allows calculations to be defined in two different ways:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Consolidations as part of a dimension definition (C: members)<\/li>\n<li>As rules calculations, associated with a cube<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Dimension element consolidations can perform addition, subtraction and some multiplication; division cannot be done in a consolidation.\u00a0 Dimension calculations are more efficient than rule calculations.\u00a0 Rule of thumb: if the calculation can be done in the dimension with C level elements, do not use rules.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Objectives<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We want to see the impact of rules on a cube. We will use the Financial Reporting cube and create a rule to calculate the Operating Income %. First, we will create a validation slice from the Financial Reporting cube to check the rule calculated results.<\/p>\n<p><strong>End Results:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-45\" src=\"https:\/\/quebit.com\/askquebit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/end-result-min.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1167\" height=\"271\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Tasks<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In order to create the Operating Income % rule, we will need to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Create a validation slice including the following dimensions:\n<ul>\n<li>Version = Actual<\/li>\n<li>Products = All Products<\/li>\n<li>Finance Measures = Amount<\/li>\n<li>Region = All Regions<\/li>\n<li>Periods Months (columns) = Total CY2014 and all elements of the Total CY2014<\/li>\n<li>GL Accounts (rows) =\n<ul>\n<li>Operating Income<\/li>\n<li>Net Revenues<\/li>\n<li>Operating Income %<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Create the Operating Income % rule (and add a comment):<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\u2018Operating Income %\u2019]=[\u2018Operating Income\u2019][\u2018Net Revenues\u2019];<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Add a feeder:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Feeders;<\/p>\n<p>[\u2018Net Revenues\u2019]=&gt;[\u2018Operating Income %\u2019];<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Validate the rule<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><u>Step by Step <\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Create a validation slice.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Expand <strong>Cubes<\/strong> and double click the <strong>Financial Reporting<\/strong> cube to open the Cube Viewer.<\/li>\n<li>Create and save the <strong>Operating Income % Rule Check<\/strong> view and recalculate (as shown below).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-46\" src=\"https:\/\/quebit.com\/askquebit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/rule-check-min.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1264\" height=\"266\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Create the Operating Income % rule.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li>Right click on the <strong>Financial Reporting<\/strong> cube and choose <strong>Create Rule<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-47\" src=\"https:\/\/quebit.com\/askquebit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/create-rule-min.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"384\" height=\"445\" \/><\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li>On <strong>Line 1<\/strong>, type <strong>SKIPCHECK;<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>On <strong>Line 2<\/strong> type, <strong>This rule will build the Operating Income % Rule for the Financial Reporting Cube<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Highlight <strong>Line 2<\/strong>, right-click, select <strong>Advanced<\/strong>, and choose to <strong>Comment Selection<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-48\" src=\"https:\/\/quebit.com\/askquebit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/comments-section-min.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"441\" height=\"338\" \/><\/p>\n<ol start=\"7\">\n<li>Click on the <strong>Brackets<\/strong> button () on the toolbar.<\/li>\n<li>Double click the <strong>Accounts<\/strong> dimension to open the Subset Editor for the <strong>Accounts<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-49\" src=\"https:\/\/quebit.com\/askquebit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/accounts.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"419\" height=\"212\" \/><\/p>\n<ol start=\"9\">\n<li>Select the <strong>Operating Income %<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Click the <strong>Keep<\/strong> button () and then click <strong>OK<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-50\" src=\"https:\/\/quebit.com\/askquebit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/keep-button-min.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"794\" height=\"147\" \/><\/p>\n<ol start=\"11\">\n<li>After the last bracket, type <strong>=<\/strong>.
