{"id":3327,"date":"2023-04-12T15:32:43","date_gmt":"2023-04-12T15:32:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/quebit.com\/askquebit\/create-mdx-expressions\/"},"modified":"2026-01-20T15:18:43","modified_gmt":"2026-01-20T15:18:43","slug":"create-mdx-expressions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/quebit.com\/askquebit\/create-mdx-expressions\/","title":{"rendered":"How Do I Create MDX Expressions in IBM Planning Analytics to Customize Queries and Reports?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>How to create MDX expressions<\/h2>\n<p>According to the dimension and your business need, dimensions may be large.<\/p>\n<p>You may want to limit the data shown in the report or input schedule.<\/p>\n<p>You can create customized categories or subsets of dimensions for your report or input schedule.\u00a0 Customized subsets are utilized to speed the selection of just the values necessary to view in reports or saved for later use.<\/p>\n<p>There are two types of subsets:<\/p>\n<p>Static\u2013 subsets that remain constant until the next selection is made in the editor, even when the dimension structure is modified.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Existing subsets will not reflect a new account until you request to see all elements for that dimension in the editor<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Dynamic Subsets\u2013 subsets that do change and are updated over time or as the dimension is modified.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Are created by assigning an MDX expression to the subset.<\/li>\n<li>The expression will run each time the subset is called by the TM1 server.<\/li>\n<li>You can record actions performed in the Subset Editor in Architect to simplify the creation of an expression in a subset.<\/li>\n<li>Use the Record Expression and Stop Recording from the Tools menu to capture actions for your expression.<\/li>\n<li>You can type MDX statements in the editor.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>What is MDX<\/h3>\n<p>As MDX (Multi-Dimensional eXpressions) is the query language used to define dynamic subsets.\u00a0 MDX is an industry-standard query language for multi-dimensional databases like Planning Analytics, although Planning Analytics only supports a certain category of the entire language and adds a few unique features of its own as well.<\/p>\n<p>When you define a subset using MDX instead of a standard static subset, Planning Analytics stores the MDX definition rather than the resulting set.<\/p>\n<p>This means the definition \u2013 or query \u2013 is re-run every time a user accesses the subset \u2013 requiring no further action by the user or administrator.<\/p>\n<p>If the database, specifically the dimension, has changed from the last time the subset was accessed, then you may get different results.<\/p>\n<h3>Syntax and Layout<\/h3>\n<p>When writing the MDX statement in Architect, you can break up a query into multiple lines to make it more readable and to correct any syntax errors, such as forgetting to close a parenthesis.<\/p>\n<p>You can prefix the dimension name of specific members.\u00a0 It is optional, if the element name Bikes is unique within the entire server, then you do not need to prefix it with the dimension name, Products.<\/p>\n<p>For example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>{{[Products].[Bikes].CHILDREN}}<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This query will return all children of the Bikes element, which is found in the Products dimension.<\/p>\n<p>If the element is not unique and you do not use the dimension name as a prefix, you will receive an error, such as:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLevel or member name \u201c[Retail]\u201d ambiguous: found in dimensions\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The use of square brackets can sometimes seem a bit arbitrary when reading examples of MDX queries.<\/p>\n<p>The reason is due to an Online Analytical Processing OLAP object name.\u00a0 For example, the cube name, dimension name, member name, must be enclosed in square brackets, only if it contains a space, starts with a number or is an MDX reserved word (e.g. Select).<\/p>\n<p>It can be simpler to decide to always use brackets.\u00a0 Similar, queries can be compared side by side more easily.<\/p>\n<p>The exact definition of a member in Planning Analytics is almost always expressed as [Dimension Name].[Member Name] and no more.<\/p>\n<p>MDX and Planning Analytics are not case sensitive.<\/p>\n<h3>Demonstration:\u00a0 Creating a Dynamic subset<\/h3>\n<h4><em>Objectives<\/em><\/h4>\n<p>In this demonstration, we will:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>create and save dynamic and static subsets<\/li>\n<li>utilize the \u201cRecord Expression\u201d command to create a subset for all years for 201?<\/li>\n<li>create a static subset of 201? Years.<\/li>\n<li>run a TI process to add a new year for 2018<\/li>\n<li>evaluate differences between a dynamic and static subset<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Results after creating a dynamic <strong>AdventureWorks2017<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Expand the <strong>server<\/strong>, <strong>Cubes<\/strong>, and double-click the <strong>Financials cube<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img is the most important button to select when recording an expression because it searches through the TM1 server for the dimension you are viewing and retrieves all elements you can see based on your security privileges.<\/p>\n<p>You can also have the ALL function appear, when you select a parent element and drill down or up the hierarchy, using other MDX functions.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"9\">\n<li>If necessary, select <strong>All Time<\/strong> and expand <strong>All Time<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>From the toolbar, click the <strong>Filter by Wildcard<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>In the Expression box, type \u201c<strong>201?<\/strong>\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32\" src=\"https:\/\/quebit.com\/askquebit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/type-201-min.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"378\" height=\"162\" \/><\/p>\n<ol start=\"12\">\n<li>Click periods that start with the characters \u2018201\u2019.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"13\">\n<li>From the <strong>Tools<\/strong> menu, select \u201c<strong>Stop Recording<\/strong>\u201d.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img Architect<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Expand Processes and select the<strong> Period \u2013 Add 1 Year to Time Dimension<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"
